PlayStation Now Service News: Sony's Streaming Service Ditches PS3, PS Vita

Sony just announced that PlayStation Now will stop servicing a wide array of electronic devices including the PS3, PS Vita, and a long list of TV models.

PlayStation Now is Sony Interactive Entertainment's cloud gaming service launched in 2014. It practically allows players to access games without having to buy them. PlayStation players will just have to subscribe to the service or pay on a per-access basis.

When it was launched during the Consumer Electronics Show in 2014, Sony teased players into subscribing to PlayStation Now through game demos of titles such as "The Last of Us," "Beyond: Two Souls," and more using PS Vita and Bravia TVs.

However, Sony is bidding farewell to the mentioned products and will focus the PlayStation Now services on the PS4 and Windows PC.

In an announcement, Sony explained, "After thoughtful consideration, we decided to shift our focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PC to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices."

Aside from the PS3, PS Vita and PS TV, owners of all 2013 to 2015 Sony Bravia TV models, all Sony Blu-ray players, and all Samsung TV models will be affected. According to Sony, refocusing their resources will put them in a favorable position to expand their services.

Affected members of PlayStation Now are advised to deactivate their auto-renewal subscription setting before April 1 for all 2016 Sony Bravia TV models and on Aug. 15 on other mentioned devices.

However, if subscribers have a PS4 or Windows PC where they wish to continue using PlayStation Now, this advice can be disregarded. The mentioned dates are the scheduled end of the PlayStation Now service for the respective devices.

Sony did not elaborate on the reason why they have to stop the PlayStation Now services for the mentioned consoles and TVs and just thanked those who have supported the service since 2014, saying: "If you use any of the above devices, we want to give our heartfelt thanks for your support, and we hope you'll continue with us. Remember that all of your PS Now cloud game saves can easily be accessed on both PS4 and Windows PC."
