'Pokemon Go' Update News: New Versions May Feature Trading, Player vs Player Battle System

"Pokemon Go" creator Niantic confirmed that three more updates are on the way for the game later this year. The announcement was made on Feb. 28 by CEO John Hanke of Niantic, the group that made the game for Nintendo, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.

Two weeks ago, "Pokemon Go" received a new update called "Generation 2," which included the addition of 80 new Pokemon monsters for players to find. While the recent update was exciting enough, Hanke announced yesterday that three more updates are coming to the game this year.

Prior to the MWC, Hanke teased that a trading and a player vs player battle system will come soon. Since the announcement, "Pokemon Go" players have eagerly awaited the promised feature, but it did not arrive with the recent major update.

While the Niantic executive did not drop any further detail about the future updates, fans are confident that they will finally be able to trade Pokemons with the upcoming versions. There are also speculations that one of the future updates will come with a revamped gym system but Niantic has yet to confirm that.

At the MWC, Hanke presented facts and figures to showcase the success of "Pokemon Go." The figures showed that the game was the iTunes App Store's top grossing app for 74 consecutive days since it was released in the U.S. in July last year. According to him, players have walked 8.7 billion kilometers and have captured 88 billion Pokemon since the game's debut.

Meanwhile, Hanke also confirmed that Niantic will soon release a new version of "Ingress," one of its most popular sci-fi mobile games.

"We'll be launching a new version of our original game, 'Ingress,' later this year and we have some other projects that unfortunately I can't talk about today. They'll be coming down the pike," he said.
