'Pokémon Sun & Moon' News, Updates: Which Mega Stones Are Up for Grabs?
Ever since it first launched in 1998, Pokémon games have evolved greatly in terms of gameplay. From a simple rock-paper-scissors concept applied on Pokémon types, strengths and weaknesses, more layers have been added to deepen the strategy, and perhaps the most popular of them all is Mega Evolution.
For those who aren't aware, mega evolution is a special type of temporary transformation introduced in sixth-generation games (Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire) that generally makes a Pokémon stronger. Aside from increased battle stats, it also gives new typing and abilities to some Pokémon, for example, Sceptile which becomes a Grass/Dragon Type and gets the Lightning Rod ability.
In order to achieve mega evolution, however, a Pokémon needs to hold a unique mega stone. Such mega stones were available in the "Omega Ruby" and "Alpha Sapphire" versions, but how does one get all of them in the current games "Pokémon Sun" and "Pokémon Moon"?
In the game, players can obtain them after becoming the Alola champion. Defeating Dexio on the Ancient Poni Path nets the player his first mega stone, the Alakazite. The rest can be obtained as prizes in the Battle Tree, but only the ones native to the Alola region are available. As for the Kanto starters Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur, their respective mega stones are given by Red after defeating him as the 20th opponent in the Battle Tree Singles challenge.
Collecting the rest of the mega stones, on the other hand, is subject to various event distributions. Participants who fought at least three battles in the 2017 International Challenge February will get first dibs on Beedrillite and Mawilite, while the Pidgeotite and Steelixite are participation prizes for the Kanto X Alola Regional Rumble.
Joining online competitions are not the only ways to obtain the non-Alola mega stones. The abovementioned items are limited-time exclusives which will eventually be distributed to all players in later months. The latest mega stones to be distributed are the Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y for the legendary Mewtwo, which can be received via Mystery Gift with the universal code, M2DESCENT.
Whether one collects mega stones for competitive play or aesthetic purposes, it is certain that mega evolution is a feature that has Pokémon trainers coming back for more.
