Police Dog Pays Respects: Photo Goes Viral as Dog Mourns Master (VIDEO)

A photo of a police dog paying respects to late officer Jason Ellis has gone viral on the Internet.

Ellis was shot dead while picking up debris on a highway exit ramp on Thursday, according to AZ Central. He was reportedly shot multiple times while standing next to his cruiser, in what appeared to be a brutal and horrific attack.

Hundreds of police officers attended the funeral for the 33-year-old Kentucky K-9 police officer, who had worked on the drug task force. Over 12,000 residents lined up to pay their respects and watch the funeral procession as it made its way to the cemetery for the funeral.

The canine, Figo, was pictured standing beside his casket. The dog has since retired and has been given to Ellis' widow, Amy.

Ellis' childhood pastor Rev. Brent Snook of First Baptist Church of Glen Este in Ohio reflected upon his death: "Heaven is a real place. Jason is there."

Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the murder of the police officer, with authorities diligently hunting those behind the barbaric crime.

In a morning service held at Parkway Baptist Church in Bardstown, Police Chief Rick McCubbin said Ellis "paid the ultimate sacrifice doing what he loved, being a police officer."

Ellis had been a minor league baseball player in the Cincinnati Reds system before becoming a police officer. He leaves behind his wife and two young sons, aged 6 and 7.
