'Power Rangers' Movie Update: To Continue 'Dino Charge' Series, Rumored to Feature Original Villain
Many of the kids from the 90's have loved the "Power Rangers" show. They grew up watching a group of teenagers transform into a uniformed team of superheroes ready to battle any villains. And now, after more than 20 years since its debut on Fox, it's making a comeback through a movie.
According to Yibada, Lionsgate and Saban is doing a major throwback by returning the all-time classic children's show to the spotlight. And it's really happening now, as reports say that they have already started casting teenagers to be the iconic characters from the series. Dean Israelite has been tapped to be the director of the movie and he will be working alongside scribes Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller for the production and script.
Collider noted though that contrary to popular belief, Lionsgate isn't making a reboot of the original "Mighty Morphin Power Ranger" TV series. Instead, they are planning to continue the story that was told in the long-running show. It will basically look like the upcoming film will follow a time period that happened after the events of the current TV iteration, "Power Rangers Dino Charge." The site also mentioned that "Power Rangers" will be filming in Vancouver beginning January to April of next year.
And even though there hasn't been a single word about the movie yet, the rumor mill is already packed with speculations on who will be the villain. As reported by Ecumenical News, there are claims that the film already has a villain chosen. And it's no new face at all, as reports say that it will feature Rita Repulsa, the original villain of the very first "Power Rangers."
The villain character was part of the original series with a backstory of being released from a space dumpster after her 10,000-year captivity. After she was released, she started trying to take over the Earth, and of course, the Power Rangers were there to go save the world.
There's a lot to look forward to with the "Power Rangers" movie but it won't be arriving until January 2017.
