'Power Rangers' Reboot Movie Pushed Back to 2017
In this era of reboots and remakes, it's not surprising to hear about remakes of previously popular TV series' for the big screen. One such remake is in the works at Lionsgate and it is the big-screen remake of the 1990s children's TV series "Power Rangers."
Lionsgate is working with Saban Brands, the rights holder of the "Power Rangers" franchise. Recently, Lionsgate announced that the movie will be pushed back to January 2017. It was earlier set for a July 2016 release date. Variety was first to report of the change in release date.
According to a report in Cheat Sheet, no reason was given for the schedule change. It speculated that it was done in order to give the movie "a more favorable line up of box office competitors." July 2016 is the same release date of "Ghostbusters" reboot and the "Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur."
The movie is being directed by Dean Israelite, with the screenplay penned by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. Miller and Stentz are also known for their work in "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class." The creator of the "Power Rangers" Haim Saban is producing the film with Saban Brands head of development and production Brian Cassentini along with Allison Shearmur for Lionsgate Films.
No casting has been revealed yet, although some casting rumors mention Liam Neeson and Chloe Grace Moretz. The only thing that has been revealed about the movie is that it will be about a group of high school students bestowed with superpowers and must come together as a team to use those powers to protect humankind from evil.
The "Power Rangers" franchise has been kept alive by the TV series in the 1990s. Most recently, a fan-made short film came out which displeased the show's creator because it displayed extreme violence.
