'Power Rangers' Release Date, Latest News: Original Green and Pink Rangers to Make Cameos; Potential Tommy Oliver Appearance Teased
The heat is up and the time is ripe for some metal hero action as the battle between good and evil kicks off in Angel Grove next week with the theatrical premiere of "Power Rangers." And the excitement will just keep on rising as more details about the upcoming reboot movie pave the way to D-Day.
One of the most recent reveals involved two cast members who were previously labeled as Cameo Role #1 and Cameo Role #2. They turned out to be two members of the original cast, Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson, who will be showing support for the reboot by playing a couple of Angel Grove residents.
Frank played Tommy, the original Green Ranger, while Johnson played Kimberly, the original Pink Ranger. They were two of the most beloved characters from the earliest batch of "Power Rangers."
When asked about the casting choice, director Dean Israelite told Cinema Blend that Frank and Johnson seemed like a natural choice, especially since the mid-credits scene will be teasing the introduction of the 2017 reboot's version of Tommy.
As the mid-credits scene goes, a teacher will call out Tommy's name in detention, and although the actor playing the iconic character will not be revealed just yet, Israelite hopes that this can serve as a proper tease for the future of the reboot movie and the potential appearance of the Green Ranger.
Could the franchise be heading towards "Green with Evil" territory, wherein the Green Ranger was first introduced as an evil adversary under Rita Repulsa's control in a five-episode arc that made the original series even more memorable for its fans?
"Power Rangers" tells the story of five teenagers from Angel Grove, who are forced to work together as a squad of metal heroes under the mentorship of the alien sage, Zordon (Bryan Cranston), to protect earth from the destructive threats of the villainess Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).
The 2017 "Power Rangers" reboot movie hits theaters on Friday, March 24.
