'Power Rangers' Release Date, News: Is Rita Repulsa a Former Power Ranger?
The movie remake of Saban's TV series "Power Rangers" is going to hit the cinemas in less than a month, and so all efforts are into making sure everyone is excited to watch the film. In the recently released commercials, however, it appears the main villain's past is being teased, pointing to a possible backstory.
There are three new TV spots for the movie. The first clip shows how five inconspicuous teens discover a space ship where they get their newly found power as the Power Rangers. Zordon (Bryan Cranston) confirms them as such, and the cute Alpha 5 makes a cameo.
The second commercial dubbed "Power" gives a glimpse at how the Rangers train to harness their acquired abilities. They are also told that they will need to rally together to fight a threat that no one can handle alone, in the person of Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).
The third TV spot, however, is where things get rather interesting. Rita sneaks up on one of the Rangers and says, "Do you know who I am? I was once just like you, full of hope." The short, cryptic line is enough to send shivers down one's spine and has caused speculations about her past.
The most popular one is this — was Rita Repulsa the former Green Ranger? This has been a topic of discussion in the YouTube comments, pointing out that the Green Power Coin is in her staff and that she may be in corrupted Ranger state. Even prior this commercial, Redditors have been discussing Rita's past and how it may be portrayed in the film.
These are all hunches as of the moment, but given the extensive research fans are doing, the speculation is holding ground. This will definitely be something that viewers will want to see when the movie finally arrives in cinemas.
"Power Rangers" are saving the world on March 24, 2017.
