Waterloo Man almost won a Match 5 Jackpot

Tony Kerr from Waterloo, Iowa almost won a big Powerball Jackpot. He got an easy pick ticket but missed one number from the white balls. He could've won a million dollars. Instead, he won $50,000 for matching the first 4 white balls.

In an interview with lottery employees, Kerr said, "I didn't even know there was a winner. I was just turning in some scratch off tickets from my birthday and I had them check the tickets."

Kerr said he will use some of the money for his medical bills and save the rest.

How the game is played

Tickets are worth $2 each. You can buy tickets at least 59 minutes before the latest draw, but this depends on the state you are in. The cut off times of some states vary.

Every Wednesday and Saturday night, at exactly 10:59 P.M. Eastern Time, 5 white balls and 1 red ball are drawn. The white balls come from a drum containing 69 balls, while one red ball is chosen from 26.

The jackpot is won when all five balls match, in no particular order, and the red ball matches.

The second highest prize is called the Match 5, and this happens when you match all five white balls in no particular order, but the red ball isn't matched. The prize is worth $1 million.

Powerplay Option

With the jackpot excluded from this option, you can pay an extra $1 for your ticket and have the power play option. If your winning ticket has this option, then you can double, triple, quadruple or quintuple your prize money, depending on what powerplay is drawn for that day (2X, 3X, 4X or 5X).

Payment Options

If you win the jackpot, you can choose between two payment options: annuity option or lump sum option. The annuity option is when you get one instant payment, followed by 29 annual payments; each payment is 5% bigger than the previous one to account for the cost of living increase.
