What the First 35 Minutes of 'Prey' Gameplay Reveals
Many first-person shooter titles are basically just that — shooting enemies with the usual war scenario. In Arkane Studio's "Prey," however, the concept is more complicated and deep than that, which is somehow teased in the first few moments of the playthrough.
In the 35-minute gameplay reveal, the focus of the game is not shooting, rather on critical thinking and keen observation. Each small detail, whether the environment or the destructive alien lifeforms known as the Typhons, can be examined to gain more understanding about the title's setting and concept, and it enriches one's experience by doing so.
Its small details also deserve appreciation. At the start of the game, the player may choose to be either male or female, so there's definitely gender sensitivity in that aspect. When the player picks items, he can choose to lay it back down or throw it, with appropriate and sometimes hilarious reactions from non-playable characters (NPCs).
The quirks end quickly though when Morgan experiences a terrible accident during what was initially expected to be a mere diagnostic test. The shapeshifting Mimic Typhons begin to wreak havoc, and he falls unconscious. He wakes up back in his apartment, thinking it may have been a dream.
Apparently, the events are all too real. He quickly realizes that he's in danger on board the Talos 1, a space exploratory lab designed to study the Typhons. Unlike other horror titles that rely on gore, "Prey" effectively incites such feeling with the mood and atmosphere.
Morgan is further plunged into more puzzles as he finds out he's the vice president for research, and that the use of neuromods allows acquisition of Typhon skills, yet erases memory permanently when removed.
From the sneak peek, the maneuvering of the gameplay is so crisp that it would be interesting to see it on PS VR. Despite it not being developed for it yet, that's definitely something worth seeing.
"Prey" follows Morgan Yu's quest to uncover the truth about the experiments and his past, and he must do it while surviving aboard the threat-infested Talos 1. The game becomes available on PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One and PC on May 5, 2017.
