Prince William Asked to Be Godparent by Drunk Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter only wanted the best for her daughter, but she did not get exactly what she was hoping for: a royal to be her daughter's godfather. Carter admittedly asked Prince William to be godfather when she was inebriated, which likely did not help matters.

"I got very drunk at one point, and I was determined to ask him to be a godfather to my daughter," Carter said at the gala to benefit the Royal Marsden cancer hospital. "He quite wisely said, 'no.' I admire him," she added. "He has got the same grace as both his parents."

Carter and William were both at the gala to celebrate designer Ralph Lauren's contribution to the hospital. He was reportedly disappointed that Duchess Kate Middleton was not present at the gala. She was home tending to Prince George, but that did not stop William, who is president of the hospital board, from attending. It was part of his duty to the charity, which he took on after his mother's death.

"He is just a stand-up guy," actor Benedict Cumberbatch said of William. "I completely forgot to ask him how he got over his jet lag from his trip to Australia, because I was there at the same time and I saw all the commotion when he went to Sydney Opera House."

"It's a wonderful thing you're backing," William told Ralph Lauren. "It will be another great addition to the hospital."

Others praised William for his dedication to charities, especially the hospital, which has special meaning for Lauren. Lauren had a benign brain tumor removed 25 years ago and lost a very close friend to the disease in 1990.

"He's taken up his mother's movement," Lauren said upon meeting the prince for the first time. Until the gala, he had only known about him through his interaction with the late Princess Diana. "Tonight's not a fashion moment as far as I'm concerned. It's a moment of connection," he said.
