Probiotics for Weight Management News: How Can It help With Weight loss?

May it be yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut or juices, it seems like every food and supplement is labeled "probiotic" nowadays. In fact, according to reports, probiotics are more widely available now than even before and it's for a good reason.

Sales have also increased with this particular product to 30 percent over the 5 years, making probiotics a $30 billion dollar a year global business. These combinations of bacteria and yeasts continue to be a trend especially among fitness junkies because of claims that they help improve digestion, ward off illnesses and even help lose weight, according to a study published in the "British Journal of Nutrition."

In the study, 125 overweight men and women were instructed to follow a 12-week weight-loss diet. Half of the participants were given probiotic pills to take every day while the other half had placebo pills. By the end of the study, the women in the probiotics group had lost 9.7 pounds, on average, while the women who took the placebos only lost 5.7 pounds. A maintenance period was also imposed and the women in the probiotics group continued to slim down, losing 1.8 more pounds, on average.

The study revealed that taking probiotics can help a person slim down because it helps make the intestinal walls less permeable. This lead to fewer of the molecules that may contribute to obesity to be able to enter the bloodstream. Researchers suggest that in order to get the slimming effect, it is recommended to consume more foods that contain probiotics along with a healthy diet that is low in fat and high in fiber.

But even though probiotics offer sure benefits, further studies are being conducted to find more evidences to the link of weight loss and probiotics.

"There's definitely a role for probiotics in dieting. But we're still teasing apart all the mechanisms involved, said Jeremy Burton, PhD, deputy director of the Canadian Research and Development Centre for Probiotics.

A takeaway is that don't count on a probiotic to replace treadmill or diet plan.
