Sony Project Morpheus Release Date: Not Available to Public Until Further Announcements

Virtual reality goggles have always been somewhat of a technological dream in the past and the Oculus Rift made that dream somewhat of a reality. The Oculus Rift was developed by an independent company Oculus and was made solely for 3D gaming.

Sony then made headway into making their own VR headset and promptly named it Project Morpheus. The device however, is still under development and won't be seeing a 2014 release as confirmed by Playstation president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida.

"Yes. That we can say comfortably because we are still making changes to the hardware," "Yoshida told Gamespot about ruling out the 2014 release.

Sony has been making several iterations of the VR headset and is currently a non-final prototype. The company is continuously making improvements to the headset in an attempt to fully recreate the feature of being "fully immersed."

The Oculus Rift VR headset has also been making improvement to its own hardware but has not announced when it will release the consumer version. A second iteration of its development kit has already been released and can be bought by developers for $350 with the consumer version to follow but it is still unclear when that will be.

Yoshida has also mentioned that the Project Morpheus headset won't cost $1,000 as previous speculations have put it in. The headset will be priced the same way Sony prices their gaming hardware – below production cost.

It is still unknown how much the VR headsets will cost but competition, the Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey has said that the device will be affordable as he doesn't want the headsets to be a "rich man's toy."
