Prom and Porn Convention Overlap Sparks Parent Complaint (VIDEO)

A Miami high school has come under question after a failed attempt to keep its students safe resulted in the school's prom being scheduled alongside a porn convention.

School officials were aware that the senior prom had been scheduled at the same time and venue as the "Exxxotica Expo" pornography convention, but decided that the two events could run concurrently without conflict. Parentswho were dropping children off at the event Saturday night, however, did not appreciate the sudden surprise.

"Oh no I don't like that," Loise Carter told CBS 4 in Miami, as she dropped her daughter off at the event. "That is terrible. I don't like it."

School even organizers stated that they had taken precautions and ordered additional security to ensure that the two event remained separate functions.

"We have hired police officers," Gwen Zaldivar, the Activities Director for Miami Beach Senior High School, told the station. "We are working together with the Miami Beach Convention Center to make sure they have their security in place as well."

While many parents and students were not notified about the second event that would be taking place at the convention, Zaldivar insisted that the event was scheduled there for safety reasons.

"We do not hold our proms in venues such as hotels, for the safety of our children and to discourage drinking. Therefore this was the only available location and it's easy to control. The students are safe," Zaldivar said.

The only other available date at the convention was on Memorial Weekend, which also concerned school officials. Some students said the double booking was a "strange".

"I didn't even know about this whole convention thing," one student said.

The Exxxotica expo is considered one of the largest adult conventions in the nation.

"I mean it's Miami, things happen everywhere you know," another student told CBS.
