'Psychonauts 2:' Double Fine Needs $3.3 Million to Make the Sequel Happen

Double Fine Productions announced during The Game Awards that "Psychonauts" is getting a sequel but only if the game's crowdfunding is successful. The game is currently running a campaign on Fig, a Kickstarter-like crowdfunding platform except that it allows backers to become investors.

Titled "Psychonauts 2," Schafer tells VG247 that the sequel will follow Raz, Lili, and the rest of the gang as they are called in for another rescue mission (see announcement trailer below). The sequel, which happens after the Grand Head of the Psychonauts, Truman Zanotto, has been successfully rescued, takes place at Psychonaut HQ this time around.

Schafer adds that the sequel will explore Raz's backstory and other things that have been seeded in the first game. As for gameplay, Raz will have new abilities in addition to his skillset in the original game. "Psychonauts 2" will also feature both mental worlds and real-world locations.

The game is important to Schafer and the game studio as the company launched around it.

"This game and those like it fill a void," Schafer told VG247. "To me, what's missing these days are 3D action-adventure platformers that are cheerful, and have humor and color instead of being gritty and dark … I think there should be alternatives. Games where you're double jumping, telling jokes and exploring mysteries — and going into people's mental worlds. There is definitely room for that in this industry."

The funding for "Psychonauts 2" is almost halfway into the goal of $3.3 million. The Fig campaign ends Jan. 8, 2016 at 10 a.m.

If successfully funded, Double Fine anticipates "Psychonauts 2" to be released in the summer of 2018. Schafer has confirmed the game will be available on the PC. The game will also be released for Sony and Microsoft, but details on which consoles it will be on are still being ironed out.
