Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform Release Date, Specs News: SoC Provides 4G LTE Connectivity to Entry-Level, Feature Phones

Qualcomm has introduced a new mobile system on chip (SoC) for entry-level smartphones. The Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform is designed to provide high-speed mobile data to consumers in emerging markets like India, Latin America and Southeast Asia, who don't usually have access to high-quality mobile devices.

The new platform comes with a Category 4 LTE modem with a peak download speed of 150 Mbps and a peak upload speed of 50 Mbps. It has support for Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) and Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), a dual-SIM setup, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.1.

The SoC also features a dual-core central processing unit (CPU) with a clock speed of up to 1.1 GHz. Qualcomm has not announced the processor's specific architecture but it is expected to run alongside the Adreno 304 graphics processing unit (GPU).

As the mobile chip is intended for feature phones, it only supports a VGA display with a camera that can deliver 3-megapixel (MP) images and capture videos at 480p at 30 frames per second (fps). Meanwhile, video playback is up to 720p.

On the other hand, the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform has been designed to be efficient so that battery life is not compromised. Users won't have to worry about running out of battery as the chip provides about 45 days of standby time, 20 hours of talk time and 86 hours of music playback.

The SoC uses a Linux-based operating system and is built using 28 nm LP process technology.

"Qualcomm Technologies is committed to the migration of users and networks from 2G, 2.5G, and 3G to 4G. Feature phones are a lifeline in many emerging countries and the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform allows us to bring 4G connectivity and services to the masses with devices at price points never seen before," said Kedar Kondap, vice president of product management at Qualcomm.

The Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform is now available and will start appearing in mobile phones in the second quarter of 2017.
