Razor Blades in Donuts a 'Scheme' by Desperate Couple
Razor blades in donuts were part of a scheme cooked up by Carole Lee Leazer-Hardman and Michael Condor, who wanted to bring a lawsuit against a local Utah grocery store and receive a big payout. Police arrested the couple and charged them with aggravated assault and filing a false police report.
"During the course of the investigation, we were able to determine that they intentionally inserted these broken razor blades into donuts that they had purchased at Smith's and then swallowed the razor blades with the donuts," Draper police said in a statement.
They became suspicious of the couple's injuries given that the donuts they purchased were in tamper-proof packaging. But Hardman and Condor decided to go ahead with the scheme in order to collect a payout from Smith's Food and Drug store in a local Utah mall.

Smith's removed the donuts after hearing of the razor blades, but police later conducted an investigation and spoke with Condor, who admitted "that this was just a scheme thought up by them," Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter told the Deseret News.
Unfortunately, a third person ingested the razor blades without her knowledge and received several cuts to her mouth. She called the police, who began their investigation into the couple. Hardman and Condor reportedly thought of the scheme because they are deep in debt and needed the money.
The story has caught the attention of media across the country and stirred incredulous reactions from the public.
"I hate to admit to this kind of cynicism, but when I read about this story a couple days ago, the first thought that entered my mind was, 'I'll bet the people did it themselves.' It's just hard to underestimate the idiotic things unscrupulous people will do when they get desperate enough. Pretty sad on many levels," samhill posted on The Deseret News website.
The couple is currently being held in Salt Lake County Jail.
