'Reign' Season 4 Spoilers: Mary Seeks Revenge Against Elizabeth
The fourth and final season of "Reign" is about to premiere and the stage is set for a battle between Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scotland (Adelaide Kane) and her cousin, Elizabeth Tudor (Rachel Skarsten), the Queen of England and Ireland.
In the season 3 finale, Mary's lady-in-waiting, Lola (Anna Popplewell), met her untimely end when they caught her plotting to assassinate Elizabeth. But Mary's not going to take it sitting down, and she's going to make her move.
As shown in the preview trailer for the premiere episode, Mary is scheming to get back at Elizabeth and it appears that she has the support of Catherine de' Medici (Megan Follows). "Killing to avenge a wrong — it's justice," Catherine said in the trailer. Well, they will have to come up with something really good because Elizabeth is no stranger to court intrigue.
The synopsis for this season's premiere episode reveals that Elizabeth will hatch a plan to sabotage Lord Darnley's (Will Kemp) relationship with Mary. Lord Darnley actually has a claim to the English throne, and if he marries Mary, Elizabeth will be in trouble.
Mary will also be testing her brother, James (Dan Jeannotte), after she found out that he met John Knox (Jonathan Goad). Can she trust her brother with her secrets? Knox might be a clergyman, but he actually came up with the assassination plot that got Lola killed. Mary never told Lola to act against Elizabeth.
Things are going to get really interesting in the final season of "Reign." In an interview with Yahoo! TV last month, executive producer Laurie McCarthy spoke briefly about the theme of the season and the show in general.
"The constant theme of the show is what do you give up to maintain power? And then the sub-theme of that is what's it like to be a woman in power? And I feel like it could not be more timely."
"Reign" season 4 episode 1, "With Friends Like These," will premiere on Friday, Feb. 10, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
