Health News 2016: Not Getting a Good Night's Sleep Might Mean Relationship Dissatisfaction, Study Reveals
Never Go To Sleep Angry May Just Be More Than Just an Adage
It may be hard for couples to get a good night's sleep when there's a misunderstanding or relationship dissatisfaction.
A good night's sleep or a restorative rest is important for one's health. Scientists from the United States found that getting that kind of sleep may be linked to the quality of relationship among couples. This means that dissatisfied couples may lose quality sleep compared to couples who are emotionally satisfied.
Emotional Satisfaction in Relationships is Important For Good Quality Sleep
The researchers looked at nearly 700 couples living together, both married and not. They were surveyed based on their sleeping patterns, anxiety, depression and partner responsiveness. The participants were observed in a sleep study. They found that couples who are responsive to one another have lowered anxiety and arousal levels, which in return give them good quality sleep at night. Responsive partners are also better at assuaging each other's worries, which can be highly beneficial for both.
"Our findings show that individuals with responsive partners experience lower anxiety and arousal, which in turn improves their sleep quality," lead author Dr. Emre Selçuk from Middle East Technical University said, as noted by Cosmopolitan. "Having responsive partners who would be available to protect and comfort us should things go wrong is the most effective way for us humans to reduce anxiety, tension, and arousal."
The study was published this week at the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.
Importance Uninterrupted Sleep and a Responsive Partner
According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep is vital for our bodily functions as well as for our emotional well-being. Sleep deficiency can cause a number of health conditions and can be detrimental to our daily life activities. These activities include learning, playing, working and maintaining relationships with others. Furthermore, sleep deficiency can mess up our body's hormones that might lead to increased blood sugar level, increased risk for diabetes and many more.
In short, an uninterrupted restorative sleep is important for everybody because it helps our bodies restore energy and heal whatever ailment is forming, the New York Daily News reported. The researchers added that the key to happiness and a longer life may be a partner that is responsive to our needs.
