"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" News, Update: Film Makes Insanely Impressive Debut at Chinese Box Office
"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" just had a historic opening in China, grossing $94.3 million in just a span of three days. Its jaw-dropping initial earnings made it the biggest Friday opening ever for a Hollywood film at the Chinese box office.
With the film still showing in cinemas, and considering its superb grossing, the sixth and final installment of the long-running franchise is now gearing up to become the highest-grossing film in the video game-based franchise on a worldwide scale.
According to reports, Sony/Screen Gems production made significant efforts to market the film in China prior to its release. The studio reportedly went as far as promoting it during the New Year holiday with the assistance of its main actress, Milla Jovovich. Despite that, the studio did not expect that the movie would make it this big at the box office on its opening day, grossing as much as $33 million. It was almost enough to cover the entire budget spent for the film, estimated at around $40 million.
"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" did not slow down after its opening in China, earning an impressive 2.85x weekend multiplier. The insane China debut has put the film's global earnings at $238 million, allowing the film to earn almost six times its production budget.
The film's debut statistics in China becomes even more exceptional considering the films that it was able to beat at the box office. These films include "Captain America: Civil War," "Age of Ultron," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
Despite "The Final Chapter's" impressive performance at the Chinese box office, it remains unlikely that Sony would reconsider the future of the franchise. The film did not fare well in other markets, especially in the United States where it is ending its run as the least-grossing entry.
