'Rick & Morty' News: Co-Creator Slams McDonald's Promo, Says They Had Nothing to Do With It
"Rick & Morty" co-creator Justin Roiland has spoken up on the whole fiasco that was the McDonald's Szechuan Sauce promotion, which was inspired by the animated series.
Over the weekend, the popular fast food chain attempted to capitalize on the fascination of the Adult Swim show's fans with Rick's dipping-sauce obsession. However, it did not turn out quite as they expected. It became a disaster, and the authorities had to interfere.
Fans of the animated science fiction series flocked to several McDonald's outlets in various cities across the U.S. after the announcement that they were going to sell the sauce for a very limited time.
According to The Guardian, police were called to at least one McDonald's outlet after a horde of "Rick & Morty" fans lining up for the said sauce started to angrily chant the words, "we want sauce!"
Following the failed one-day promotion of the fast food giant, Roiland, one of the show's creators and the voice behind both Rick and Morty, took to social media to express his disapproval of the whole incident.
"FYI: We had nothing to do with this McDonald's stuff," the co-creator wrote on Twitter. "Not happy w/how this was handled. Please be cool to the employees it's not their fault," he added.
McDonald's, on the other hand, owned up to their mistake and reportedly promised that the Szechuan Sauce will be back soon and that they will have enough for everyone who wants to get their hands on it.
Releasing an official statement via their Twitter page, McDonald's assures "Rick & Morty" fans that the company is going to do "whatever it takes" to bring back the much-coveted sauce this winter and will be making it available for a longer period of time.
"Rick & Morty" is recently wrapped up its 10-episode third season. There is no word yet as to when the show will be back for season 4.
