Rihanna Takes on 'Modest' Middle Eastern Fashion?

Rihanna may be known for pushing the envelope with public displays of nudity, but the 26-year-old pop star wanted to reflect modest fashion choices as the covergirl of Harper's Bazaar Arabia.

Rihanna is appearing on the cover of the July/August issue of Harper's Bazaar Arabia in a spread titled, "The New Modesty: Cover Up in Style." According to the Barbadian singer, she wanted to reflect traditional middle eastern culture in her spread that was photographed by Ruven Afanador.

"I wanted to do something high fashion, but still something traditional to their culture," Rihanna said on the set of the photo shoot, according to The New York Daily News.

The singer is featured in the middle eastern edition of Harpers Bazaar with a long black bodysuit, form fitting clothing and flamboyant accessories like a gold face mask. However, Rihanna has never shied away from dressing with far less clothes on.

Rihanna showed up to the CFDA awards in little more than Swarvoski crystals earlier this month. The singer wore a racer back see-through dress covered in 230,000 Swarvoski crystals exposed her entire top and most of her bottom at the event where she accepted the 2014 Fashion Icon Award.

After being introduced by Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the singer who is no stranger to controversy revealed how she uses fashion as a defense mechanism.

"Growing up I didn't have a lot of access to fashion. But as far as I could remember, fashion has always been my defense mechanism," Rihanna said while accepting her fashion icon award. "Even as a child I remember thinking, 'She can beat me, but she cannot beat my outfit.' And to this day, I mean, that is how I think about it."

While Rihanna acknowledged that there are rules in the fashion world she said, "rules are meant to be broken."
