Rihanna and Brown, 23, split in 2009 following a domestic violence incident which left her bloodied and bruised and that also saw Brown convicted of assault.

Winfrey was running her syndicated talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" at the time that Rihanna was physically assaulted by Brown and the 58-year-old publicized her opinion about the incident on the show, which some say upset the 24-year-old.

"Let me tell you why [Rihanna] got back with [Brown], in my opinion if you go back with a man who hits you, it is because you don't feel you're worthy of being with a man who won't," a candid Winfrey told her audience.

"If a man hits you once, he will hit you again. He will hit you again," she said.

Winfrey and her longtime business associate and friend Gayle King went on to dedicate an entire show to domestic violence after details about Rihanna's assault were leaked to the media.

Winfrey explained that abusive relationships reflect an individual's self worth and she said that if "[you] think you are a wonderful person, somebody hitting you is really offensive to you. This show is dedicated to all the Rihannas of the world, and to any young men who could ever think about hurting a woman."

Rihanna, who went back to Brown after the assault before eventually leaving him, took to Twitter to respond to Oprah which led to speculation that she was irritated.

"I hear Oprah and what she is saying, But.. at the same time she does not know what's best for me i do respect her though," Rihanna tweeted.

The "Where Have Your Been" now appears to have to qualms with Winfrey over her prior statements and has agreed to the open up during the exclusive interview.
