The Rio 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place this Friday. However, it was reported by Yahoo that the pre-Olympic coverage on the country revealed its distasteful sides with traffic, poverty, pollution and diseases including Zika at the forefront.

Eight years prior to the Rio 2016 Olympics, Brazil was one of the many who bid to host the games. The International Olympic Committee awarded the country the bid and the decision was met with cheers of joy and former President Lulu da Silva even wept with happiness.

Brazil is financially broke and the country is undergoing political instability due to the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. Pollution is rampant which concerns water sports competition plus there is the looming threat of the Zika virus as well. Construction for structures to be used in Rio 2016 Olympics is poor. News reports have been shedding light on Brazil's reality and that have skeptics commenting on whether the Rio 2016 Olympics event will even push through.

Rio 2016 Olympics Schedule

The opening ceremony of Rio 2016 Olympics will happen on Friday, August 5, 7 p.m. EST. However, football games will start August 3, BBC reports. The football competition starts earlier than the opening because there are nearly 60 matches for 16 men's and 12 women's teams from participating countries.

There are a number of ways to watch the Rio 2016 Olympics online, via the TV, live stream and even virtual reality, Time shares.

For those with cable, Rio 2016 Olympics can be watched in NBC, NBC Sports Network, Bravo, MSNBC, USA Network and more.
