'Room' movie spoilers; Brie Larson to play Ma
"Room" is the latest movie to be made that is based on a best-selling book of the same name. The story is narrated by five-year-old Jack who firmly believes that the room where he lives with Ma is the whole world, until he discovers the outside.
The book plot is a bit dark so the movie is expected to be the same. The book was inspired by the case of Joseph Fritzel, the Austrian kidnapper. The film is about a woman who was kidnapped and locked in a shed by a sadistic sociopath and gives birth to a child. The child then becomes the key to her freedom.
The film stars Brie Larson as Ma and Jacob Trembley as Jack. Actress Brie Larson spoke about her preparation for the role. "I did not leave my house or use my phone for a month. I practically stuck to a diet of apples and protein shakes and ended up building almost 20 pounds of muscle. My first real food was a crack pie from Momofuku. It was amazing," she said. "I lived this moment of Ma, having this recognition that there's something outside myself that I have to survive for," she added.
She also built rapport and a very close relationship with Jacob Trembley, her on-screen son. Eight-year-old Trembley was a bit timid toward Larson at first, but eventually felt at ease with his on-screen mother. She praised the work ethic of children like Trembley. "They're really hard workers. They have no ego, they don't care about the size of their trailer, and they just give. It makes it so much fun. I knew the movie could never go 100 percent dark as long as he was around," she said. In fact, Trembley would sing Jackson 5 songs to her when she cried.
The trailer for the film has triggered an emotional response. It is very eerie in a sense. Emma Donoghue who wrote the book also wrote the script for the film, which will be directed by Lenny Abrahamson.
Room will premiere on Oct. 16, 2015.
