Rory Feek Talks About Joey's Hometown Memorial, the Generosity and Support of Strangers in 'Our Town'
In a recent blog post, country singer/songwriter Rory Feek, whose wife and music partner Joey died earlier this month after battling cervical cancer, wrote about returning to his wife's hometown, where the community held a memorial service in her honor.
Joey was buried in the Feeks' farm in Tennessee on Thursday, March 10. On Sunday, March 13, Rory and his two-year-old daughter Indiana returned to Alexandria, Indiana, where Joey grew up and also where she spent the last few months of her life. Not long after, Rory shared several snaps and videos from the trip and talked about what Alexandria means to his family.
In the post, titled "Our Town," Rory recalled that the first time he went to Joey's hometown was in April 2002. It was the weekend the couple got engaged and Rory met Joey's family.
"We took one final tour-bus ride home," Rory wrote. There, the couple's family and friends had gathered in Joey's high school gymnasium to commemorate the life of one of their town's own.
In the post, Rory thanked those in Alexandria for their hospitality and generosity. The Feek family stayed in Alexandria after Joey decided to discontinue treatment for her cancer and entered hospice care in late 2015.
"I never paid for a piece of pizza while we were there the past five months," he recalled. "Or an oil change. Or hardly even a meal at a restaurant. I've been hugged by cashiers at Home Depot and had people cry in my arms in the produce aisle of the grocery store. I've had waitresses pray with me in restaurants and neighbors drop off home cooked meals day-and-night to the house we were staying in."
According to the Grammy-nominated country/bluegrass artist, the kindness of strangers and the love he felt in Joey's hometown made the difficult time they were going through a little easier.
