'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Reboot Cast, Plot News: Producers Search for Lead Star
The search is on for the actress who will play the titular role in the "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" reboot on The CW. Unlike its earlier iterations, however, this show won't be a light-hearted teen series.
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that the reboot will be titled as "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" to go with its darker theme. He also teased the pilot's script and presented the first look at the character as a powerful witch.
Casting for "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" begun in late September. Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater revealed in its New York Comic-Con panel that fast-tracking production was necessary because the show will air in 2018.
"You'll be able to meet her soon," Goldwater told the audience about Sabrina.
Archie Comics first released "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" on print in 2014 for its horror genre line-up and it amassed a following from comic fans. Its story revolved around Sabrina struggling to reveal her true character to her boyfriend Harvey. In this version, Sabrina grew up in a coven with Satanists.
It's unclear, however, how far The CW will adapt the stories from the comics. What's certain is that it will not be anything like the '90s ABC series that starred Melissa Joan Hart.
Incidentally, Hart was also at the New York Comic-Con promoting "The Watcher in the Woods." She said she heard about the reboot but she will not be part of the show.
Hart further said that the new series will explore the supernatural aspect, which she can't relate to. The actress said she's more attuned to the high school version of Sabrina.
Arrowverse showrunner Greg Berlanti will help Aguirre-Sacasa develop "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" as a companion series to "Riverdale," which currently runs its second season. It's also likely that both shows will have a crossover in future episodes.
