Safari guide killed by lion in Zimbabwe park where Cecil the Lion used to live
Quinn Swales, a safari guide in the Zimbabwean national park where Cecil the lion lived, has been mauled to death by another lion while walking with a group of tourists on Monday morning.
According to the company he was working for, the Hwange National Park incident broke the hearts of the guests who were with Swales at the time.
"Quinn did everything he could to successfully protect his guests and ensure their safety. He was tracking lions when a male lion unexpectedly charged," Camp Hwange, the company, said in a statement on its Facebook page, also assuring that there were no others who were hurt.
The statement said the 40-year-old guide died in the morning of the attack from injuries he suffered.
The Hwange National Park first got worldwide attention after news surfaced about the death of Cecil, one of the more popular black-maned male lions who lived in the area.
Local authorities reported that Cecil was lured out of the park and was killed by hunters hired by American dentist Walter Palmer. The hunt was reportedly illegal and Palmer, who received a whole deal of anger from people across the globe, has denied that he committed any wrong.
Camp Hwange says it is a small safari company that specializes in guiding tourists through walks in the park, which covers the northwestern parts of Zimbabwe.
The company also clarified that Swales was one of their "fully qualified and experienced" guides but was unfortunately the target of a pride that he tracked in the morning of the incident.
According to CNN, though the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority did not specify which lion attacked Swales, they said in a statement that one member of the pride that included two females, two males, and two cubs was wearing a tracking collar, just like Cecil, and he was named Nhaxa.
