Samsung Edge News: Korean Company Will be Outdone by Apple's Curved-Edge Display Patent? [DETAILS]

Apple Working on iPhone Edge Curved Display Patent

Samsung has expressed that they like the idea of curved display phones so much that they're willing to make it their company's signature.

The Korean company's latest Samsung Edge phones have appealed to the masses for its unique designs. However, Apple has a curved-edge display patent that will seemingly outdo Samsung's in terms of not just uniqueness but in actual usefulness.

While Samsung has made its curved-edge ideas known to the public by releasing them with their smartphones, Apple has been taking their time with their own version. Samsung's Edge smartphones only have the curved displays up to the front but Apple plans to wrap the display around their future iPhones. Apple's patent would also include buttons and switches on the side of the phone, a feature not found in Samsung's Edge smartphones.

BGR points out that instead of physical buttons, there might be virtual buttons or other indicators on the sides of Apple's future curved display iPhones. Furthermore, the user may also have the ability to know what function is running on the sides. Apple may not also be eliminating the current functions on their iPhones but rather replace them with something else in order to do away with physical buttons.

9to5 Mac adds that Apple's curved edge display smartphones may have some sort of divider for the front and side. This means that the edge of the smartphone will be square-like despite having a curved display underneath.

Curved-Edge Displays – Who Came Up with it First?

Samsung released its first curved-edge display smartphone through the Galaxy S6 Edge. However, Apple had filed a patent for the same in May 2014, several months before the Korean company released their line.

Apple was just recently granted the patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office, according to Patently Apple. The website notes that Apple has been actively editing and improving their patent in the past year and this indicates that they are working on it.

The published patent revealed that maybe it was Apple after all who came up with the curved-edge design idea. With Apple's ongoing rivalry with the Korean company, do you think Samsung will ask for permission to use Apple's concept or make one of their own and make it more impressive?
