Samsung Galaxy Phones Will Get Monthly Security Updates Even for Unlocked Devices
Samsung has made a new commitment to bring Android security updates at least once a month to its unlocked U.S. phones. A message from the phone maker says that it is now "committed" to release updates for unlocked Galaxy devices in the United States every month.
According to ZDNet, the company has begun to send a reply to its users, answering their questions about Android updates for their mobile devices. As early as last week, Samsung owners who have been in conversation with company representatives, with the Samsung Mobile Security team in particular, have in some cases received a reply claiming that Samsung will be providing monthly updates for Galaxy devices, according to screenshots from various sources.
The reply received by ZDNet appeared to be pretty much the same, with the company stating that they have moved past certain issues that were stopping them from sending regular updates for unlocked Galaxy devices. Samsung, from here onward, has "committed" to a monthly security update release, according to the reply.
"Due to various circumstances, we have been releasing security updates for unlocked (open) Galaxy devices in the U.S. on a quarterly basis. However, we have now resolved the challenges; and we are committed to releasing security updates for those devices on a monthly basis," the information from Samsung Mobile Security Technologies stated.
In the United States, at least, unlocked Samsung devices are not even available at launch, according to Ars Technica. Buyers had to wait for three months for the unlocked, carrier-free version of the recently launched Galaxy S7, for example. That usually meant that the unlocked U.S. version is already behind on updates — something that can now be remedied if Samsung can follow through this new commitment of monthly updates.
