Samsung Galaxy S2: Samsung Tries to Ban iPhone 4S Sales in Australia, Japan

After losing an important patent battle with Apple in Australia last Friday, Samsung, the maker of the new Galaxy smartphone, charged against the iPhone 4S maker with yet another patent lawsuit Monday.

Samsung reportedly filed an injunction request in an Australian court on Monday, alleging that Apple's iPhone 4S, which launched Friday, Oct. 14, violates the Korean company's wireless patents. In a similar suit filed in Japan, Samsung argues that the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 violate four of its patents, reported ZD Net, an Australian tech and business publication. Samsung reportedly filed for preliminary injunctions in the Tokyo District Court.

The two tech giants are locked in an extensive, international patent war.

In June, Apple has received a patent for its signature iPhone after no less than three years. Samsung was trying to block the patent, as it requires other smartphone makers to perform a lot more gymnastics with designing their devices and not plagiarizing iPhone.

A Dutch court rejected Samsung's call for a ban on Apple's products in the Netherlands Friday.

On Oct. 5, Samsung said it would seek to block iPhone 4S sales in France and Italy. The Korean technology company alleged that Apple's new iPhone also violates its patents in Europe.

The Australian patents protect data-transmission methods, while the Japanese patents protect user interface designs and power consumption, reported ZD Net.

The latest action comes after a court in Australia issued a temporary injunction Thursday requested by Apple blocking Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer there, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Apple's iPhone 4S launched Friday in the United States. Pre-orders for the device kicked off on Oct. 7 and the new iOS 5 software became available for free download on Oct. 12. The iPhone 4S comes with an A5 chip and iOS 5 pre-installed. Apple promised that the smartphone would be twice as fast as its predecessor, the iPhone 4.
