Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update Release Date Finally Arrives
Samsung has finally decided to roll out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge starting Monday.
The South Korean tech giant announced on Monday that it will start updating the Android 6.0 Marshmallow software of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge immediately. The software of Samsung's other Galaxy units will also get the update gradually, according to CNET.
The schedule of the Android Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will depend on the location and carrier of the device. As for the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the company has not specified if the larger smartphone would also receive the update, the report details.
Google first launched the Android Marshmallow along with its Nexus smartphones. The software will introduce a redesigned app drawer, improved Google Now function, and longer battery life, the report relays.
The said update will also bring an improvement to the S6 Edge's edge screen feature. The Marshmallow rollout will stretch it out to 550 pixels from the previous 260 pixels to allow users to add more apps, ZDNet reports.
The Marshmallow update is expected to give the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge a boost in the market. However, they will most likely be dethroned from the top spot once Samsung unveils its new flagship device during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The tech firm will reportedly introduce the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge during the upcoming event.
Unfortunately, only 1.2 percent of all Android devices are using the Android Marshmallow as of the beginning of February this year. This means the adoption of the software is a bit slow, and Android KitKat is still the most popular version of the mobile operating system.
Once manufacturers start rolling out Android Marshmallow across devices, its adoption is expected to have a marked improvement. Samsung's initiative to upgrade the software of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge is also expected to contribute to the acceleration of Marshmallow adoption.
