Samsung Galaxy S7 Release Date, Specs News: May Come in Early 2016, In Two Chipset Variants
Barely a month after its latest big reveal, Samsung is already back in the thick of all rumors that is it already working on its next flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S7. According to several reports, including one in International Business Times, the Korean phone manufacturer is hard at work in testing two different chipsets with the new device, in order for them to make an early 2016 release.
According to the IBT report, one variant will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip, while the other variant will feature Samsung's own Exynos chip. The company is said to be putting the Snapdragon 820 chip through "rigorous testing," especially after a previous Snapdragon chip caused overheating problems when earlier tested for the Galaxy S6.
Further details about the Snapdragon 820 chip reveal that it will not have the same Cortex-based architecture like its predecessors, the 810 and the 808 chipsets. One report claims that it will have an octa-core Kyro processor, while another suggests that it will have four Hydra cores and an Adreno 530 GPU.
2016 is apparently an ideal time for Samsung to unveil the device, as it will have a clear advantage over its competitors. Traditionally, Samsung would wait until a big event such as the Mobile World Congress towards the end of the first quarter of 2016, but given that they broke tradition this year when they announced the Note 5 and the Edge Plus outside of the IFA 2015, it will not be surprising that they will do the same thing next year.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 which is codenamed "Jungfrau," is rumored to be in the "middle testing" stage of device development, according to another report in Tech Times. This report however claims that it will just run on the Snapdragon 820 processor.
Aside from the device's processor, other rumored specifications include running on the latest Android OS, the soon to be released Android Marshmallow. Samsung is said to be working on "a firmware build with Android M v5.2 based on the latest developer previews."
