Samsung Galaxy S8 vs. LG G6 Specs: Which Smartphone Has the Better Display?
The two major South Korean electronics chains, Samsung and LG, have once again gone head-to-head with their latest smartphone releases – the Galaxy S8 that features the "Infinity Display" and the LG G6 that arrived with "FullVision."
Noticeably, both smartphones highlight one major hardware improvement – a much bigger screen-to-body ratio of their display designs. But they have major differences too. The Galaxy S8 naturally sports the curved-edge design while the LG G6 skipped that feature.
Screen
During the release of the LG G6 at the Mobile World Congress last February in Barcelona, Spain, the company took pride in developing a much bigger screen without the need to upsize the dimensions and to sport the curved-edge design.
In fact, when the LG G6 was officially announced in Barcelona, the company enlisted the help of an ergonomics expert to back LG's decision of skipping the curved-edge trend. According to Dr. Andris Freivalds from Penn State University (via Forbes), "We also found that with curved displays, aka edge screens, users felt more tired holding the phone and had more erroneous touches."
But if it goes down to the technical display specifications, the Samsung Galaxy S8 might have a bit of an advantage.
The Galaxy S8 sports a 5.8-inch super active matrix organic light-emitting diode display, while the LG G6 comes with a 5.7-inch in-plane switching liquid crystal display screen. In terms of resolution, the Galaxy S8 comes with the advantage of having 1,440 x 2,960 pixels while the LG G6 works with a 1,440 x 2,880 resolution.
Both smartphones' displays are protected with the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. And on a good note for both devices, the much larger screen ratio will be maximized as they both come off the box with Android 7.0 Nougat operating system that allows multi-window functions.
Other Specifications
In the processor department, however, the Galaxy S8 is ahead since it sports either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 (depends on the country or region of purchase) that operate with four cores with 2.4 gigahertz and four cores with 1.9 GHz for the U.S. model. On the other hand, the LG G6 runs with Snapdragon 821 that has dual-core 2.35 GHz and dual-core 1.6 GHz
On the other hand, the LG G6 gets on the same level with the Galaxy S8 in terms of memory capacity. The Galaxy S8 comes with the standard 64 GB internal memory while the LG G6 has the 32 GB and 64 GB options. Both run with 4 GB random access memory. Each has a dedicated microSD slot (up to 256 GB) and the option to use the second SIM card slot for memory expansion as well.
The LG G6 sports the trending dual-lens rear camera (both 13 megapixel) while the Galaxy S8 comes with the conventional type 12 MP shooter. But both devices can capture 4K videos with 2,160 resolution at 30 frames per second. As for the selfie sensor, the Galaxy S8 is equipped with an 8 MP component while the LG G6 has a 5 MP shutter.
The LG G6 is powered with a 3,300-milliampere hour battery pack compared to the Galaxy S8's 3,000 mAh. However, since the Galaxy S8 is yet to arrive in the market this month, it still needs to be tested whether Samsung's newest smartphone can actually keep up with LG G6's battery.
And as for the most considered aspect – retail price – there is also only a slight difference between the two smartphones. The LG G6 is now out and can be bought through major U.S. carriers with prices that range from $600 to $712. The Galaxy S8 (and S8 Plus) arrives on Friday, April 21 with an expected price tag of around $724.
