Samsung Galaxy S9 Specs, Release Date Rumor: S8 Successor to Be Unveiled Earlier Than Planned and Here's Why

Samsung is fast-tracking the release of its next big offering — the Samsung Galaxy S9.

A report out of the company's home fort Korea claims that the flagship is slated for unveiling at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), which is set to take place at the end of February.

The report is corroborated by Bloomberg, whose sources familiar with the matter claim that the Samsung Galaxy S9 will indeed see the light of day just before March rolls in.

Both reports cite the reason for the change in release schedule as the Apple iPhone X and the South Korean giant's attempt to steal the thunder from it.

Indeed, the Cupertino giant's decade anniversary mobile offering has dominated the market and is expected to do so as the new year comes in, but Samsung intends to cut that short.

Reports about a much earlier release have been around for months now. Samsung, however, set expectations a couple of weeks ago, saying that it will not take place as early as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January as some rumors claimed. It still counts as an earlier launch since its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S8, was unveiled last March.

Samsung Galaxy S9 is poised to challenge the latest and most powerful iPhone to date with its imaging upgrades in the form of a dual camera setup, which, per reports, will be exclusive to the Plus model.

This is much like how Apple reserves the premium specs to the bigger iterations of their past couple of iPhone releases. This move, however, is a first for Samsung, which always made sure their S-series flagships came with the same set of features save for size-related tweaks like the display.

As part of the change, the regular Samsung Galaxy S9 will reportedly come with 4 GB of random access memory (RAM) while the Plus version is getting 6 GB.

Users can also expect a better placement for the fingerprint sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S9 although it will still be found on the rear panel and not under the display, as opposed to some reports.
