Samsung Galaxy View – bigger and better with a 18.4 inch screen?
At the IFA event in Berlin recently, Samsung, while launching its much awaited Gear 2 Smart Watch, had a surprise announcement to make. It hinted at "bigger things" to come. There are speculations that Samsung will most probably come up with a new, bigger tablet that will have an 18.4 inch screen.
Reports have been going around for a month that Samsung is working on a tablet with a huge screen and upping its entertainment quotient. When Samsung had announced the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ last month, they had hinted at a new product, the Gear 2 Smart watch. Now, when the Gear 2 has been launched, Samsung is talking about a new product and dropping hints like "think bigger" and "a new dimension of entertainment". Speculating on these hints, Samsung will soon be out with Galaxy View, an 18.4 inch tablet codenamed SM-T670.
Images of the device has leaked and show a tablet with a big screen and a prop to support it. This means it is for viewing all sorts of media and it would mainly be for people who take their entertainment seriously.
It is surprising that Samsung is coming out with this kind of huge tablet in face of declining tablet sales around the world. Even Apple is facing this problem and there are not many takers for its iPads. Apple too seems to be adopting the same strategy as Samsung and coming out with iPad Pro with a 12.9 inch screen. Would these two giants be trying to revive flagging interest in tablets and iPads or they are just reluctant to admit that the days of exclusive tablets/iPads are over?
Samsung Galaxy View might just survive as it seems to have been designed for watching movies, TV shows and Internet streaming content.
The Samsung Galaxy View will most probably have the following specs:
Display -18.4 inch screen with a low resolution of 1920 x 1080 ppi. Its dimensions are rumoured to be 451.8mm x 275.8mm x 11.9mm.
Inside - Exynos 7580 processor with 2GB RAM, 32GB storage combined a with microSD slot for expansion.
Camera - A 2.1MP front camera and an 8MP rear camera.
Battery - A large 5700mAh battery.
Samsung has not revealed any release date for its new device, but again, it is rumoured to be launched in October this year.
