Samsung Gear S3 Specs and Release Date: Smartwatch to Be Unveiled this September? Software and Variant Details
The Gear S3 will be Samsung's Newest Entry to the Smartwatch Market
With the IFA 2016 conference set to sail in Berlin on September 1, fans and tech geeks are anticipating the new innovations that renowned tech companies have to offer. Korean giant Samsung will likewise be participating in the event, unveiling the Galaxy Gear S3 smartwatch.
Design
The Gear S3's production codename is reported to be "Solis," which is Spanish for the word sun. This rightfully hints that the device will once again come with a round overall theme. The watch face would be circular, similar to its previous iteration. The metallic build for the bracelet and a corrugated bezel then gives off a Rolex-inspired design.
The new smartwatch will also feature either a 1.2 or 1.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with Always-On display feature. The bezels would be rotatable, retaining the design and control features of the Gear S2.
Software
As always, the device will run Samsung's proprietary Tizen operating system. This would allow for the software to maximize the Gear S3's rotating bezels for input. The overall theme is also said to have been revamped. There was also a beta program for the Gear S2 to test its compatibility with the iPhone, which is believed to be a native feature for the new iteration.
Hardware and Performance
The Gear S3 is set to be equipped with an arsenal of sensors for productivity, fitness, and practicality. It will include a GPS for location tracking, a speedometer, an accelerometer, a gyro sensor, an altimeter for altitude tracking, an SpO2 sensor for monitoring oxygen levels, a heart rate monitor, a barometer, and a pedometer.
These sensors allow for the constant monitoring of both the weather and the user's health statistics. The screen will also be protected by Gorilla Glass 4, and has an IP68 certification for dust proofing and water resistance.
The smartwatch also features NFC, allowing for the Samsung Pay service to be implemented, should Samsung include it in the Gear S3. It will be powered by a 1GHz Exynos sensor natively manufactured by Samsung. The device will come with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The Gear S3 will also pack a 400 mAh battery, which is 100 mAh higher than its predecessor.
Different Models
The Gear S3 is rumored to be released with three variants, the Gear S3 Classic, Gear S3 Frontier, and Gear S3 Explorer. The Gear S3 Classic would be the base version, while the Gear S3 Frontier might be the higher-end one. The Gear S3 Explorer is tailored for outdoor enthusiasts, as there would be separate physical buttons for easier access and interaction with the device.
De Grisogono, a well-known luxury jeweler, has earlier stated that they would be partnering with Samsung for a device to be released later this year. This is projected to be a luxury version of the Gear S3, as the same company produced 100 units of luxury models for last year's Gear S2.
