San Diego Padres MLB Rumors 2017: Padres Still Interested in Jered Weaver
It looks like the San Diego Padres may not be done tinkering with the roster just yet, because they are reportedly keeping an eye on a couple of veteran pitchers in the free agency market. According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Padres are considering signing either Travis Wood or Jered Weaver.
Wood is a new name on their wishlist list, but the Padres have missed out on signing him because he just inked a deal with the Kansas City Royals. Aside from the Padres, the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs were also interested in him as well. Wood was a relief pitcher for the Cubs last season. Since Wood is off the board, the Padres may have to turn elsewhere for their pitching needs.
Weaver has been linked to the Padres for months now, but the team still hasn't signed him. Last month, FanRag Sports said the team offered him a $1.75 million deal, but Weaver reportedly turned it down.

It should be noted that Weaver signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels back in 2011, so the offer was just a paltry sum for him. His prime is clearly behind him and the Angels aren't bringing him back, so perhaps he should consider the offer. Weaver went 12–12 with a 5.06 ERA in 31 starts last season.
Rosenthal also noted that a potential reunion with Jake Peavy is less likely to happen. Peavy played for the Padres from 2002–2009 before he was traded to the Chicago White Sox.
The Padres have already signed Clayton Richard, Jhoulys Chacin and Trevor Cahill to one-year deals this offseason and Paul Clemens, Cesar Vargas, Tyrell Jenkins, Luis Perdomo and Christian Friedrich are also on the roster.
The Padres seem to have a knack for signing veterans to low-cost deals, so maybe they can find some more players to add to their team.
