San Francisco 49ers NFL Trade and Roster Rumors: 49ers Will Strongly Consider Drafting Quarterback With Second Overall Pick

For weeks now, a lot of observers have noted that the San Francisco 49ers were one of the teams likely to trade down in the draft to acquire more picks.

However, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport has recently reported that multiple sources told him that the 49ers were "strongly considering" selecting a quarterback with the second overall pick in the draft.

Well, the team really needs to add another signal caller since Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley are the only quarterbacks under contract at the moment. But will they really use a high pick on one when high first-round prospects like Leonard Fournette, Solomon Thomas, Marshon Lattimore and Jamal Adams are still available?

During the team's pre-draft press conference on Monday, 49ers general manager John Lynch also admitted that they would consider taking a quarterback with the pick.

"I think we've stated from the beginning that a franchise quarterback is something we believe is essential to winning in this league. We hope that [Brian] Hoyer and [Matt] Barkley come in, and they were both brought in for a reason, but we feel like we'll continue, always continue, to try to improve ourselves at that position. And so I think the answer is yes," Lynch said, according to ProFootballTalk.

Teams have obviously called and asked about the second overall pick and Lynch said they were going to listen to offers until draft day. However, he also noted that they were willing to use the pick on a player who they felt would become a franchise cornerstone.

Could this be some sort of ploy to force the Cleveland Browns to trade up? The Browns really liked Mitchell Trubisky and they are reportedly considering using the top pick to select him. The Browns have been stockpiling picks, so giving up an extra pick to trade up shouldn't be a problem for them.
