Sara Ramirez Lands First Role After 'Grey's Anatomy' Departure

"Grey's Anatomy" alum Sara Ramirez is returning to TV. She has landed her first role since her departure from the medical drama.

"We're very excited that Sara is joining the cast," executive producer and series creator Barbara Hall announced. "She brings a fresh perspective and a fun, energetic quality to the State Department staff."

Ramirez, best known for her role as the orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres on "Grey's Anatomy," is back to the small screens. This time, she will play a witty political strategist named Kat Sandoval in CBS' "Madam Secretary." She has been cast as a series regular.

She left "Grey's Anatomy" at the end of season 12 after more than ten years and 200 episodes of playing Dr. Torres.

The character description released indicates that Ramirez's new role is a legendary figure in politics, especially in DC but she dropped everything for some reason up until the titular character herself Elizabeth (Tea Leoni) convinces her to return. The State Department's latest member will be introduced in the Nov. 19 episode of "Madam Secretary."

"We are thrilled to have Sara join the Madam Secretary State Department team," said Lori McCreary, executive producer. "From the moment she walked on set with her talent, intellect and spirit, she became part of the family!"

Bebe Neuwirth's exit opened up a role for the actress. Last Sunday's episode will be her last, she admitted. And she requested to leave the show. She played Nadine Tolliver and was a series regular since the show debuted in 2014.

Apart from Leoni, the political drama also features Tim Daly, Zeljko Ivanek, Keith Caradine, Sebastian Arcelus, Patina Miller, Geoffrey Arend, Erich Bergen, Kathrine Herzer, Wallis Currie-Wood, and Evan Roe.

"Madam Secretary" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
