School Bus Crashes in Denver, 18 Injured, Driver Killed; Officials Refuse to Reveal Identity of Female Bus Driver
Denver school bus driver instantly killed in the crash, had to be cut to be removed from the scene. Passengers suffered minor injuries.
A school bus, which just picked up 15 players and three coaches from a Colorado high school from the Denver International Airport rammed into a large concrete pillar on Sunday. It instantly killed the driver and injured all the passengers. The driver of the ill-fated Denver school bus was a female, but authorities still refuse to reveal her identity. Reports said that she was going around 30 to 40 mph in a 15 mph lane.
Police Sgt. Mike Farr mentioned that they thought that it was kind of mysterious that the bus was there in the first place. He said that the driver took a left to return to the airport terminal loop instead of making a right turn. Not one of the passengers could tell him why the driver did that. The driver only drove straight and slammed the bus into the pillar.
Farr could only reveal that the driver was female and was about in her 40s. She died on impact and the only way to remove her body from the wreckage was to cut it out. Eighteen passengers sustained minor injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Most of the passengers have already been released.
Mechanical failure or intentional act?
Farr said that they are investigating different possibilities that could have led to the accident. One is that the school bus could have suffered from some kind of mechanical trouble and another one is, the driver could have some kind of medical condition which worsened during that time.
Passengers could not recall anything unusual and were not worried at all. They said that the incident happened without warning.
Investigators are also looking into the possibility that the act was intentional on the driver's part.
Farr finally said that it took time for them to rescue all the passengers, since the bus suffered severe damage. No bystanders or pedestrians were injured because of the incident.
One of the three school buses
Police said that the bus that crashed was just one of the three school buses that picked up a group of players from Legacy High School in Broomfield located north of Denver. The football players were happy to return home from a charity game against players from the Chino High School located in the Los Angeles suburb.
The bus that crashed into pillar was the lead bus and luckily, the two other buses were safe. All the students were very eager to go home when the dreadful incident happened.
