Seattle Seahawks Running Back Chris Carson Out for the Season With a Lower Leg Injury

Seattle Seahawks have officially lost a promising rookie running back for the rest of the season.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has confirmed that tests have shown that Chris Carson has sustained a fracture in his lower left leg and he would need to undergo surgery on Tuesday to stabilize the ankle ligaments that were damaged.

"Last night when they did the initial X-rays, his ankle was fine. And they didn't see anything cracked there. But he's got a fracture that's way up just below his knee. It's not a displaced one and all that. But because of the torque, the way it happened, it was not in the area they were focusing on. And so I told the team he didn't have a broken leg, and everybody was excited about that for him. But he does," Carroll said on 710 ESPN Seattle, via ProFootballTalk.

The Seahawks have announced that they are placing Carson on the injured reserve list, and they have re-signed Quinton Jefferson off the Los Angeles Rams' practice squad. The defensive end played for the Seahawks last season, but he failed to make the final 53-man roster last month.

Carson went down with the injury in the fourth quarter of their 46–18 victory over the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday. His left knee appeared to have buckled when he was tackled by Colts linebacker Jon Bostic and he was taken off the field on a cart moments after the trainers tended to him.

This is a huge blow for the Seahawks because Carson has emerged as the team's primary running back this season.

Carson's backup, C.J. Prosise, didn't suit up against the Colts due to an ankle injury, but the Seattle Times' Bob Condotta has reported that he's expected to play against the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.

Eddie Lacy and Thomas Rawls should get more playing time now that Carson is out for the season.
