Selena Gomez Lauds Demi Lovato for Documentary's Success

Selena Gomez praised longtime friend Demi Lovato for detailing her struggles with an eating disorder, with substance abuse, and depression in a documentary titled "Simply Complicated."

"This was beautiful. I'm so happy for you," Gomez wrote in a comment on a teaser of the project Lovato posted on Instagram. "You always continue to [be] bold and real. I wish more people were like you. Love you."

In the documentary, Lovato was candid about how she battled bulimia nervosa and how she continues to struggle with it every day. One thing she has yet to fully conquer is her eating disorder, she says in the video.

Earlier this week, the pop singer shared photos to prove that recovery is possible. In her Instagram story, she shared before and after photos of herself, one was from a time she was very skinny and another was of her current healthy self.

As previously reported, the documentary also chronicled the making of her latest album "Tell Me You Love Me," which launched last month. She also detailed how she struggled with her breakup with her boyfriend of six years Wilmer Valderrama and how she channeled all that energy to create her music.

"Tell Me You Love Me" features the hit single "Sorry Not Sorry." It is Lovato's sixth studio album.

Though the former Disney stars are no longer the besties they once were, they still have a number of things in common, one of which is the passion for their advocacies. Both are known for being advocates of mental health.

Gomez is one of the people behind Netflix's "13 Reasons Why," which centers on teenage suicide. The singer announced her lupus diagnosis in 2015. She also took time off to deal with anxiety, panic attacks, and depression following the diagnosis.

Lovato's YouTube documentary "Simply Complicated" premiered on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
