Meanwhile, Elena Vesnina surprisingly earned her first Grand Slam semifinal after beating Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-2. Being a part of the final four just seemed so unbelievable to her.

"I am very surprised," she said in an interview. "It was like a dream came true. I'm always thinking I can do well in the Grand Slams. I had some good wins. I was close to be in the quarterfinal couple times, but it was not good enough. I was just waiting and waiting for this happen. But, of course, semifinal is a big surprise for me."

Vesnina played at the 2016 Brisbane International in January. She qualified for the main draw and defeated Australian wildcard Tammi Patterson, Mathilde Johansson and Ysaline Bonaventure. It was supposedly a good start, but Vesnina lost in the first round, and she failed to reach the main draw of the Australian Open. That lost gave her a series of failures, and her singles ranking dropped to no. 122 in the world.

However, by finally being a part of the semifinals, she was able to prove herself, and to everyone as well, that failure is not the end.

"Everybody had this kind of time when you're down and you're thinking that it's over, you're never going to be there, and you're watching tennis on the TV, how everybody's winning and playing semi-finals, finals of the grand slams," she said. "But I'm a very positive person . . . I know that now I'm close to 30. Most of you are thinking that it's end of the career. But look at Venus. Look at Serena. It just depends on how you feel and how you want to keep going, how you want to continue your matches, your games."

The last unseeded singles player standing said she will pursue hard in winning the next match. She added that in order to win your game, you must be solid, and you must stick to it.

Although the game is expected to be a really competitive one, the two opponents seemed to display a friendly impression toward each other. Vesnina said she admires Williams a lot. Williams, on the other hand, said Vesnina has a really good grass court game and a good serve.
