Seth Curry Expected to Start at Shooting Guard for the Dallas Mavericks This Season
The Dallas Mavericks' logjam at the guard positions has made it difficult for them to decide whom to start at shooting guard this season.
Seth Curry, J.J. Barea, Devin Harris and Yogi Ferrell could all start at the two guard spot alongside rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr., but it seemed that head coach Rick Carlisle might have already made up his mind before the Mavericks took on the Milwaukee Bucks in their preseason opener earlier this week, and he told reporters that Curry was likely going to get the starting job this season.
"I think at this point, it's probably going to be Seth. I've just been real impressed with him the first week and right now, it makes sense. I'm not saying it's 100-percent. But we need a consistent scorer and a guy who can guard that position and he's continued to make strides," Carlisle said on Monday, via SportsDay.
But Curry still doesn't have a firm hold on the starting job and Carlisle said he will have to continue to work on his game to keep it.
"This is a day-to-day business. He's got to continue to do that to solidify that position. Having him off the bench would be a huge plus as well," Carlisle stated.
Aside from Curry and Smith, Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews are also projected to start at the forward positions while Dirk Nowitzki is getting the start at center. All five starters are threats on the perimeter and they should not have any problem pushing the pace.
Of course, there are going to questions about their defense since Curry is undersized as a shooting guard, but he has actually done well on the defensive end of the floor last season. In any case, he's better off playing off-guard because he doesn't have the quickness and playmaking skills of an elite point guard.
