'Shadow of Mordor' Sequel 'Shadow of War' Announced: Slated for August 22 Release Date

Publisher Warner Bros. officially announced the upcoming sequel of "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" titled "Middle-earth: Shadow of War," and it is slated for an Aug. 22 release.

The upcoming installment will be available on PCs, the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and even the Xbox Project Scorpio - which makes it the first game to be confirmed for the upcoming console.

Although Warner Bros. told fans that they will announce more details about the game by March 8, a listing from Target International already revealed the game's description, which reads: "Go behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses and dominate Mordor from within."

The description also shares that players will experience new stories and personalities while also fighting against the Dark Lord Sauron and his Ringwraiths.

Another listing from Target also disclosed that the game will have a Gold Edition aside from the Standard Edition.

The Gold Edition includes four story expansions, namely the Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion, the Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion, the Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion, and the Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion.

The Gold Edition allows players to forge a new Ring of Power and dominate Mordor with a personal Orc army, while the Nemesis Expansions contain a new Orc Tribe and Mythic Gear Sets. The Story Expansions include "a new campaign, playable character & abilities, side missions, enemies, allies & more."

As the game will also be available on the Xbox Project Scorpio, fans believe that it will be playable in 4K-display, but Warner Bros. did not reveal what other unique details the Project Scorpio version has.

Being available on the Xbox Project Scorpio also means that fans will have to wait until the holidays to get their hands on whatever new version the console will bring for the game.

The first installment, "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor," was released in 2014 with both critical and commercial success. It earned the 'Game of the Year' award during the 17th Game Developers Choice Awards.
