'Shadowhunters' Season 2 Episode 11 Spoilers: Hit Fantasy Series Returns in June with New Characters and Bigger Threats
The midseason finale of Freeform's fantasy series "Shadowhunters" may have concluded Valentine's (Alan Van Sprang) quest to destroy the Downworlders, but it might have also introduced a much greater threat in its place. And now that Jace (Dominici Sherwood) knows that Clary (Katherine McNamara) is not really his sister, will he ever get a chance to tell her the truth?
Valentine has been apprehended and the Soul Sword was deactivated thanks to a brand new rune that Clary drew on it. But while Shadowhunters and Downworlders alike were mourning their losses and celebrating their victories, one mysterious man was seen making off with the Soul Sword. Who is he and what kind of threat or assistance will he bring to the Institute?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly following the midseason finale, co-executive producer Todd Slavkin revealed that the Soul Sword, along with the other two mortal instruments — the mortal cup and the mortal mirror — will play a huge part in the second half of season 2. But as to who took it and why, viewers will just have to wait for the show's return to find out.
As for the new character reportedly coming into the show, Slavkin said that his entrance will complicate things, including everybody's relationships in ways that have not been seen on the show before. But was Sebastian (Will Tudor) the one who took off with the Soul Sword? It seems to be the general consensus at this point, but the showrunners are neither confirming nor denying it.
"He's a big bad villain of the books, really. So that's a huge part of 2B moving forward," Slavkin said.
Jace, Clary and Simon's (Alberto Rosende) dynamics will also be put in a tough spot if and when Jace finally decides to tell Clary that they are unrelated. As for how Simon is suddenly able to walk in the daylight, Slavkin revealed that it was Jace's pure angelic blood that did it, and that if the Downworlders were to find out that Jace could make them all Daylighters, it would really put Jace's life in danger.
"We deal with that moving forward in 2B and it's a secret that Simon holds dear to his heart," Slavkin added.
The second half of season two will open up the rift between the Shadowhunters and Downworlders growing bigger following the events in the midseason finale. Clary, Jace, Alec (Matthew Daddario), and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia) will try and forge a new beginning. But with the threat of Sebastian's arrival and the Seelie Queen's appearance looming on the horizon, will things ever be okay again between these two warring factions?
"Shadowhunters" season 2 episode 11 airs on Monday, June 5, at 8 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
