'Shenmue III': Slacker Backer Campaign Brings Funds Close to $7 Million Mark
Crowdfunding is one way to finance a game's development and at the same time ensure interest, as the project is supported by its backers. While "Shenmue III" has already reached the needed amount to finish production, it has opened yet another crowdfunding for more individuals to show their support.
In the game's official website, a Slacker Backer campaign is ongoing, which can be accessed on its preorder tab. Similar to the original Kickstarter campaign, an amount pledged corresponds to rewards/perks entailed within, though the team behind the game clarifies that the additional content are not guaranteed but they'll exert their best possible effort.
While the game no longer needs any more funds for its development, such campaign was opened for those who didn't make it in during the Kickstarter crowdfunding, which ended way back in July 2015. The additional funds that will be obtained from Slacker Backer will be used to reach the stretch goals, making the game even bigger than what was originally conceptualized.
It can be recalled that the title only needed $2 million to begin with production, and yet it has amassed $6,333,295 from 69,320 backers in Kickstarter, showing how much interest the gaming community has in the game. Now that the accumulated pledged amount from both campaigns is just hundreds of thousands away from the $7 million mark, it is close to yet another improvement.
The last solid update regarding its development was back in December, when the developers said they were entering the final stages: "We have now entered the final phases of R&D which has allowed us to slowly, but surely, show some of the different game elements and features. Marching along into 2017, we hope to show more of these different elements, along with the increasing depth of the world of 'Shenmue.'"
"Shenmue III" is set for release on PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Microsoft Windows platforms on December 2017.
