She will betray them and will live up to her name. Mary is an assassin that is after Holmes all along. This time John and Mary leave their past behind.

Aside from Mary betraying Holmes and John, Moriarty (Andrew Scott) will also be back and so does third Holmes brother Sherrinford. Moriarty will bring in more darkness into the show once he returns. Holmes will face him and know so well that Moriarty will cause destruction.
It is hinted that Tom Hiddleston will play the role of the third Holmes brother Sherrinford. He will also be the ghost that will haunt Holmes in "Sherlock" Season 4.Aside from Hiddleston, Toby Jones who plays the role of Culverton Smith is said to be the darkest villain ever in the series.
There are speculations that "Sherlock" Season 4 will have more backstories as it moves on. A time lapse will also be experienced by the two main characters in order to solve the mysteries.

Sherlock Season 4 is going to tell stories of each character with a dark side. This upcoming season is said to be the darkest one ever. Sherlock will work with John in fighting Moriarty and now the new villain Culverton Smith.
This is going to bring challenges to the two since Smith is known to be a very dark soul. His rotten teeth represent how rotten his soul is. He will do what it takes just to destroy Holmes. Smith also has a shady character that cannot be trusted. With him, one can never tell what kind of relationship he hopes to have.
As Holmes meet up with John and Mary Watson again in the upcoming season, there are stories that will unfold. Mary is pregnant with John at this time. It also will be the time that Mary betrays the two men.
"Sherlock" Season 4 is also set to have Holmes always at a distance. He does this to make sure that he observes the world from afar to prepare for his next move. Holmes and John Watson continue to solve the mysteries lurking in the place.
