'Sherlock' Season 4 Spoilers, Air Date: First Full-Length Trailer for Special Episode Released

The first full-length trailer for the one-episode special of "Sherlock" is finally out ahead of the BBC series' highly anticipated return for its fourth season.

The "Sherlock" special episode is expected to be aired during the holiday season, and based on the trailer, it will take place in the 1890s — the original time setting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. During the BAFTA Television Awards last May, Sherlock co-showrunner Steven Moffat explained that they wanted to put the characters in the right setting where they were originally supposed to be, according to iDigital Times.

"We've got, I think you can safely say, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson of a generation — we want to see them do it in the proper outfits, just once," the Times quotes Moffat's statement back in May.

Moffat also said they are proud of the outcome of their efforts to correct the "time period" for Sherlock. He also said season 4 will be a "real cracker."

In "Sherlock's" first full-length trailer for the standalone special, Benedict Cumberbatch is seen playing Sherlock Holmes and giving the verbal cue that they are ready to start their mission. The episode will reportedly be based on Doyle's 56th short story titled "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," which is all about Detective Holmes solving a mixed-up arrest of a convicted plumber accused of stealing a jewel.

The "Sherlock" special episode will serve as the kickoff for the series' fourth installment as it shows Holmes collaborating once again with Martin Freeman's character Dr. John Watson to solve the new mystery. But the trailer released by BBC gives no real clues about the villain or the case itself. The appearance of people wearing pointy head gears may indicate that the Ku Klux Klan may be involved, Christian Today explains.

The said trailer takes on a gloomy overtone, but the mood is occasionally broken by humorous quips from the main characters, the report adds.

Although reports say the one-episode special will be aired around Christmas, there are also whispers about the Victorian Special being aired in January 2016. "Sherlock" season 4, on the other hand, will reportedly start production next year and will air in 2017, but BBC still has to confirm these rumors.
